Perry, he enlists in the U.S. Army and is sent to Fort Independence in Boston Harbor. "Tamerlane and Other Poems" is published 1829, January 1 - Promoted to Sergeant Major February 29 - Poe's foster mother dies April 15 - Poe leaves Army and goes to Washington December - "Al Aaraaf" is published 1830, June - At West Point, the U.S. Military Academy 1831, February 21 Poe leaves West Point April - "Poems by Edgar A. Poe" second edition published in New York Summer - Arrives in Baltimore to stay with Mrs. Maria Clemm and her daughter Virginia 1833, October 12 - Poe wins first prize in a competition run by The Baltimore Saturday Visitor with his "Ms. Found In A Bottle" 1834, March 27 - John Allan dies in Richmond, leaving Poe nothing 1835, August - Poe moves to Richmond to become an assistant editor of the Southern Literary Messenger October 3 - Mrs. Clemm and Virginia also move to Richmond 1836, May 16 - Poe and the 13 year old Virginia are married 1837, January 3 - He leaves The Messenger and goes to live in New York 1838, July - "The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym" is published Summer - He moves to Philadelphia 1839, June - Poe is appointed assistant editor of Burton's Gentleman's Magazine 1840 - "Tales Of The Grotesque and Arabesque" is published. Poe leaves Burton's 1841, April - Poe becomes editor of Graham's Magazine July - Treasury Department rejects his application to become a clerk in Washington 1842, January - Virginia breaks a blood vessel while singing May - He leaves Graham's Magazine 1844, April - Poe moves to New York; becomes assistant of New York Evening Mirror 1845, January - "The Raven" is printed March - He is appointed one of the editors of The Broadway Journal October - He obtains post of proprietor of The Broadway Journal 1846, January 3 - The Broadway Journal closes and Poe moves to a cottage in Fordham 1847, January 30 - Virginia dies 1848, June 10 - He meets 'Annie", Mrs. Nancy Richmond September - He meets "Helen", Mrs. Sarah Helen Whitman, to whom he proposes November - Proposes to Helen again, then goes to Boston where he attempts suicide December 22 - A marriage agreement is drawn up, but the engagement is broken off a few days later 1849, June - He goes to Richmond with ideas for a new magazine July - Arrives at a friends home in Philadelphia, in a state of delirium July 13 - In Richmond he meets Sarah Elmira Royster whom he hopes to marry August - Poe lectures on "The Poetic Principle" October 3 - In mysterious circumstances he is discovered unconscious in Baltimore and is taken to Washington College Hospital. He regains consciousness but is delirious and suffers much torment Sunday October 7 - Edgar Allan Poe dies He is buried in Baltimore. |
